Lead Pastor Position at Mountain Bible Church

We are actively searching for a new pastor to succeed our retiring pastor.

About Mountain Bible Church

Mountain Bible Church of Loma Prieta is a non-denominational church that has been serving the Santa Cruz Mountain community since the 1920s. We are a church that has experienced different phases of growth and changing community circumstances. Currently, our community has seen a high influx of young families with parents working in the Bay Area. This presents the opportunity to reach an unchurched population through ministering to their spiritual and social needs. MBC is passionate about reaching our community with the gospel of Christ as we endeavor to grow in our faith and service to others.

Mission Statement

Mountain Bible Church’s mission is to build deeper relationships with God, with other members, and with the community — reach up, reach across, reach out.

Statement of Faith

We believe …

… in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

… in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

… in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic* Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

This confession of faith is known as The Apostles’ Creed.

* The word “catholic” refers to the universal church of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Emphases

Six emphases, expressing God’s unique mission for us, characterize our congregation:

  • To proclaim the gospel though outreach and ministry — Matthew 28:19-20; Acts 1:8; 2 Timothy 4:1-2
  • To encourage deep, personal love for God — Matthew 22:34-40; Revelation 2:1-7
  • To maintain committed loving relationships among one another. — John 13:35; Acts 2:42-47; 4:32-37; I Corinthians 13
  • To love people by acts of service.
 — Matthew 5:14-16; 25:40; Acts 6:1-4; 9:36; James 1:27; 2:14-17
  • To help each member discover and use his or her spiritual gifts. — Ephesians 4:7-13; I Corinthians 12-14; Romans 12
  • To pursue Christ in faith by persevering with one another. We welcome
adversity, for if things went smoothly we would have no need for faith.
 — Ephesians 4:1-6, 4:29-5:2, 5:15-27; James 1:2-5

Demographics

Approximately 10,000 people live in the 95033 area code, and most live along the Highway 17 corridor from about Lexington Reservoir to Summit Rd., along Summit Rd. and down San Jose-Soquel Road. The church is centrally located on the community’s major thoroughfare on Summit Road, situated between the school and the main store.

A demographic report can be found here.

MBC does not have formal membership, but our active congregation numbers around 50. Many members are either retired or nearing retirement, though our most active growth has been among younger families.

Governance

Current leadership consists of four elders and the pastor. We believe in the unity of the spirit, taking action when there is a unanimous decision. An elder’s term is indefinite. The current board members have served for 38 years (two), 35 years, 20 years and 15 years respectively. Two elders and the pastor will be retiring in the next year. An immediate aim is to expand the eldership, including male and female elders.

Staff positions and ministries have sometimes been filled in the past with paid positions and sometimes with volunteer positions depending on the circumstances at the time. Several staff positions are outlined below:

Meals INC. Meals In the Name of Christ is a partnership with “Housing Matters” of Santa Cruz, CA to provide nutritious hot meals for residents of the homeless center every other Saturday. This is currently staffed on a volunteer basis primarily led by MBC members but includes volunteers from three other churches and from the community.

Mobile Food Pantry. In addition to the bi-weekly meals, MBC leads a food distribution to the needy on a weekly basis staffed by volunteers. This includes a partnership with the local food bank and local grocery store donations who donate excess food for distribution.

Missions. MBC does not have a formal missions department. However, many mission trips have been led by member volunteers including significant work in Niger, Africa, and Jamaica (MBC supported a member missionary there for several years), as well as short-term trips to Guatemala and Mexico.
